There's a bit of a price difference, so it makes me say no at first, but who knows.

Oh, Paul knows!

I for one am glad that the model number correlates directly with the True Watt Seconds (WS) rating of the new lights.

I know on some forums people complain about the fact that the AB400 isn't 400 true WS but 160 True WS.

Well, I'm sure it was done to not cause confusion between the old and new line.

I don't think people would like an AB800 and an AB800 Max.
Too confusing I think.
The new model numbers make sense...

Hmmmm.. now I REALLY wish I had a job...thanks Luap. Now I'm going to cry in the corner. I'd love to get my hands on the new parabolic light mod, and the AB max sounds interesting as well.

I did have a question on the new beauty dish, is the difference from the old one the light output? (besides price, which is nice to see!)

To be honest, I was really hoping for einstein news today, but from what I see, these max units may be superior for my need. As an amateur, I've always been more attracted to the AB series over WL.

I feel like we just got handed an Einstein-lite. The only thing I see missing is 12v operation, and (unsure) speed vs. Color controls. I imagine durability as well.

However, I'm not as interested in the metal body, and it looks like the new LCD display includes color temp. As far as 12v, I have my own mod-sine inverter and battery, so I'm fine there.

I've always loved the price of an units, and it looks like if you account for the wireless discount of 90 for a csrb+, vs 30 for the module, these things are sacreaming cheap, somewhat more so for the 640/1600 unit ($10 more) than the 320/800 ($60 more) unit.

Let me say that again. Ten bucks extra. For 8 stops of range. On the model where people would upsize to the wl1600 to go from 5 stops to seven stops.

Gripes? A 160ws unit would be nice, but may not be price competitive with the current ab400, that's just a guess.

The reflector is now an add-on, which may be moot, as all but my bg lights have modifiers.

I just can't understand how they're doing it. A digital upgrade, an LCD screen, a quartz bulb. Take off a reflector. It's like his r&d is free.

Anyway, my next decision is whether to fleabay my current units, or keep em and run both.

Does the frost dome stay on the light at all times?

Yeah it looks like the new AB's and hopefully the Einsteins will have their own version of CS modules. I like the idea of a plugin module vs. sync cords.

Those AB Max units sure do look interesting and a great price ratio vs. specs.

Hopefully the new plugin module will be backward compatible with the current CSR triggers.

I'm exhausted from all of this.

To answer some questions:
CST and the CSR variations were designed from the start o be forward compatible with the ABMAX and it's plug in transceiver, not the reverse. This is the new PCB remote standard - replacing the 1986 analog standard.

The hard part was making 20 years of PCB lights think forward - thus the CSR+ and CSRB+. They trick vintage PCB lights into thinking this stuff was all coming 20 years ago. The easy way would have been to say the heck with the old and force customers into the new stuff. Instead, I chose to let the older products stand proudly beside the new products and all work together, Believe me, this was no easy task. Notice from the comparison chart that none of the lights there - even the $1500 ones, have the control capability of your 1896 WL Ultra + CSR+ and Cyber Commander.

Now, for we shall now refer to as AB Classic. My intention was for ABMAX to be the second generation AB Classic - to replace it. But cost realities set in. So AB Classic will remain very much alive until such point that I can get some of the ABMAX technology down to the $224.95 price range. The wheels are already turning, but, geez, I only have one brain and 16 hours in each day.

One big point for the ABMAX vs AB1600: To "go modern" an AB1600 costs $359.95 + $89.95 for CSR+ = $449.90. ABMAX 640 is $429.95 + a $29,95 Transceiver = $459.90 - only a $10 difference. An ABMAX 160 was planned and developed but the selling price would only be $10 less than ABMAX 320. The ABMAX price is cheap for you, but expensive for me - the profit margin is as low as we can make it. It should be $100 more but I'd rather sell lights than have a high profit margin. It's all in the Laffer Curve. One point: ABMAX goes to half the power of AB400, and is dead accurate and repeatable even at 2.5WS.

As for colors - no color changes for classic AB. If we try to offer too many items and variations we degenerate the core of our business and become Walmart.

As to differences between ABMAX and Einstein, the fundamental difference is that Einstein's flash duration gets faster immediately as you drop power (i.e faster at at --.5f than at Full) and is faster at any power setting than ABMAX). So ABMAX is a step approximation. But a glance at the comparison chart, at least in my mind, makes any of the megabuck competitors look pretty lame in comparison to ABMAX, let alone Einstein.

That's because Paul is 90% of the r&d department .... I would assume that can keep costs down .... 8)

Yes. But it's on spring clips so it's easy to take off for lamp replacement. The dome eliminates reflector hot spots and protects the lamps.

I bought a $180 Elinchrom 16" sports reflector to test. It's build quality is lower than our reflectors, it has a dark center pattern and looks like a a cobweb with the modeling lamp on an RX600 - a combination of the lack of frosted dome and poor reflector design. No way it's made in Switzerland. Big profit margin - few sales. The Laffer curve demonstrates this relationship.

Luap,
I see you also included a steel insert in the mount of the AB Maxs.
This is a welcome feature to me, it looks very sturdy!
