Buff Ambassador - Kira Derryberry
Kira Derryberry is a portrait photographer based in Tallahassee, FL. She found her start as a teenager, spending hours in darkrooms in high school and college. Kira graduated with a BA from the University of Alabama with photography as her focus. Knowing how to shoot, but not necessarily how to start a business, Kira leaned on her experience as a web designer for work, taking a job at a Tallahassee based advertising agency for 5 years before making the leap to opening her studio in 2010. Since her studio opening, Kira has developed a strong client base in portraits ranging from children and families, to headshots and commercial photography. When not slinging a camera, volunteering for her photographic community, or hanging with her husband and little girl, she spends much of the remainder of her free time playing video games and watching bad science fiction.
Kira is an active member of the photography community and attributes much of her success to being a participant in photography organizations such as her local photography guild Tallahassee Professional Photographers, her state PPA affiliate Florida Professional Photographers, and Professional Photographers of America. She’s a Master Photographer, Photographic Craftsman, Certified Professional Photographer, Nationally Approved International Photographic Competition Juror, and Member of the Board of Directors for Professional Photographers of America. She’s been a speaker at photography groups and conventions around the country including on the platform at Imaging USA. Kira is passionate about helping other photographers level up their skills and frequently teaches a One Light Made Simple workshop to photographers who may be intimidated by off camera flash. She also co-hosts the popular photography podcast Get Your Shoot Together with Mary & Kira alongside colleague Mary Fisk-Taylor which focuses on studio, business, life and keeping it all in line.
WHY PAUL C. BUFF, INC.?
"I started out using only available light. As my business grew, so did the demands of the clients. I needed to learn how to strobe and fast. Paul C Buff Alien Bees were easy to learn, non intimidating, and affordable. I was able to pick up two Alien B400s and taught myself how to use them in just a few days playing around in my living room. 10 years later, I'm still learning new tricks with my lights every day. Best of all, it takes a beating. Hauling gear back and forth to jobs can be hard on equipment and I'm probably harder on them than anyone I know! And when things do go wrong, the customer service is phenomenal. Love working with Paul C Buff gear!"
